Single setting torque wrench with extensions calculator All, I have been going back and forth in my head on if I should shorten my extension or increase it and I need a second opinion to straighten me out. Generating torque is how you open doors, whether you have to quickly pop a car door or slowly pry open a bank-vault door. But how do you find out how much torque you generate? First, you calculate the lever arm, and then you multiply that lever arm by the force to get the torque. Take a look at diagram B in figure.
Norbar’s torque wrench extension calculator is now available as an app to download free on iPhone and Android. An invaluable tool for engineers, the torque extension app calculates the exact torque wrench setting value for required level of torque to be applied. In many industries -- including aerospace, automotive and structural engineering -- a torque wrench, which can be calibrated in foot-pounds, is a common means of tightening threaded fasteners. Measuring torque without a torque wrench requires good access to the joint. Learn the formula for adding an adapter to a torque wrench today. We review what each value represents so you can ensure you have accurate measurements.
When you put an extension on a torque wrench, the torque applied to the fastener increases. Use the Norbar Torque Wrench Extension Calculator app to find what value you should set into the wrench to achieve the required fastener torque. The app comes in four language options, English, French, German & Spanish.
1 torque wrench with 5 ftlb gradiations 1 New, clean 1/2" nut (well 12 mm) and a bolt. A) Tighten the nut finger-tight then apply the torque wrench and see if I can get a reading before the nut loosens. -Nope. b) Tighten the nut to 10 foot pounds with the torque wrench, and try to loosen between thumb and forefinger. -No dice. May 15, 2014 · Handle extensions can be used on the rigid frame-type torque wrenches because the extensions on these types of torque wrenches do not change the torque applied to the fastener. However, when you use an extension on the drive end (except when the extension is at 90 degrees), it will change the required torque reading on the wrench.
Sep 23, 2013 · Cheater bars are used commonly on torque wrenches in the construction industry. A torque wrench with a cheater bar will still read accurately. Torque through the wrench is still unimpacted. Krazie, I would agree with you to an extent.
I think confusion might arise from the fact that you can buy "Torque limiting extensions" which prevent over torquing when used with an impact wrench. These extensions reduce the peak torque at the other end by absorbing some energy and making heat. If you were to use them on a static wrench they would have no effect.
